Reviewer: AI
Date: 2026-08-07
Scope: Full review of target.dj against source.dj (accuracy, terminology, fluency, completeness)
## Summary
The translation is accurate, complete, and fluent throughout, with a consistent
→ "awakened nature", 串习 → "habitual patterns", 信愿行 → "faith, aspiration, and
practice", 三资粮 → "three provisions"). No source paragraph is omitted; no critical
mistranslations were found. Two major issues (both terminology) and a set of minor
issues are listed below.
Both items from edit-suggestions.dj were verified as applied: line 62 uses noun
forms ("refuge, aspiration, precepts, right view, and śamatha-vipaśyanā") and line
100 uses "disengaged" for 消极. No stale items.
## Critical
None.
## Major
### M1. 加行位 rendered "stage of earnest effort" — nonstandard term
**Location:** target.dj line 58, source line 58
**Current:** "the path goes from the stage of earnest effort and the stage of
accumulation, through the stage of seeing and the stage of cultivation, all the way
to the ultimate stage"
**Issue:** 加行位 is the standard second of the five paths (pañcamārga), rendered
in English as the "path/stage of preparation" (or "application"). "Earnest effort"
is not a recognized rendering and will not be identified by readers of Buddhist
literature. Note also that the source lists 加行位 before 资粮位, reversing the
canonical order (资粮 accumulation → 加行 preparation); the translation mirrors the
source order, which is the correct editorial choice, but the term itself must be
standard.
**Fix:** Change "the stage of earnest effort and the stage of accumulation" to
"the stage of preparation and the stage of accumulation". Optionally add a
translator's note flagging that the source order differs from the canonical five-path
sequence.
### M2. 惑业 mistranslated and inconsistent — karma dropped at line 84
**Location:** target.dj line 84 (also lines 88, 90, 161 for the inconsistency)
**Current:** line 84: "the perils of samsara and the afflictions born of delusion";
lines 86/88 and 161: "deluded karma"
**Issue:** 惑业 is a technical compound — 惑 (affliction/delusion) + 业 (karma), the
two factors that drive samsara. Line 84's "the afflictions born of delusion" drops
业 entirely and reframes the compound as a single concept, while other passages
render it as the single noun phrase "deluded karma". The same term should not be
split two ways, and karma must not disappear from the sentence.
**Fix:** Render consistently as "delusion and karma" or "afflictions and karma".
Line 84: "the perils of samsara, with its afflictions and karma". Line 86: "a life
based on affliction and karma". Line 161: "dissolve affliction and karma".
## Minor
### m1. 万亿 understated as "millions and billions"
**Location:** target.dj line 46, source line 46
**Current:** "then hundreds and thousands of times, then millions and billions of
times..."
**Issue:** 万亿 = 10^12, i.e. trillions; "millions and billions" understates the
escalation.
**Fix:** "then hundreds and thousands of times, then trillions of times..."
### m2. 发心 ("Aspiration") collides with 愿 ("aspiration")
**Location:** target.dj lines 11 (TOC), 80 (heading), 82; collision with lines 90,
94, 96 (愿 rendered "aspiration")
**Issue:** The section title 发心 is rendered "Aspiration", while 愿 (as in 信愿行,
愿离娑婆) is also rendered "aspiration". In line 94 both senses appear in adjacent
sentences ("Aspiration is setting the mind..."), and a reader cannot tell 发心 from
The body text manages the distinction, but the heading invites confusion.
**Fix:** Consider heading III as "Setting the Intention" or "Arousing the Mind"
(keeping "aspiration" for 愿). If "Aspiration" is retained, no change is strictly
required — the surrounding text disambiguates.
**Location:** target.dj line 151, source line 151
**Current:** "without knowing that Amitābha is the greatly virtuous name"
**Issue:** 万德洪名 is a stock Pure Land epithet — "the august/great name of myriad
virtues". "Greatly virtuous name" is weak and reads as generic praise.
**Fix:** "without knowing that Amitābha is the great name of myriad virtues"
### m4. 同圆种智 rendered "share the same perfect wisdom"
**Location:** target.dj line 116, source line 116
**Current:** "you share the same perfect wisdom as all the Buddhas of the ten
directions"
**Issue:** 种智 (一切种智, sarvajñāna) is specifically omniscience/all-knowing
wisdom, the Buddha's distinctive knowledge. "Perfect wisdom" flattens this and
risks confusion with prajñā.
**Fix:** "you equally perfect omniscience with all the Buddhas of the ten
directions" or "you share the same all-knowing wisdom as the Buddhas of the ten
directions".
### m5. 西天 rendered "Western Paradise" — wrong connotation
**Location:** target.dj line 67, source line 67
**Current:** "Practice three years --- the Buddha is off in the Western Paradise."
**Issue:** Here 西天 means the distant western heavens (India), i.e. the Buddha
receding ever farther away as faith fades. "Western Paradise" evokes the Pure Land
of Ultimate Bliss, a specific and unintended referent in a talk about Pure Land
practice.
**Fix:** "Practice three years --- the Buddha is far off in the west."
### m6. 光头俗汉 loses the pejorative
**Location:** target.dj line 29, source line 29
**Current:** "they remain merely bald-headed laypeople in dyed robes"
**Issue:** 俗汉 ("worldly fellow") is derogatory; "laypeople" is neutral and
softens the rebuke. The point is that untransformed monastics are worldlings in
disguise.
**Fix:** "they remain nothing more than shaven-headed worldlings in dyed robes"
**Location:** target.dj line 102, source line 102
**Current:** "genuine and not merely apparent... What I call apparent altruism..."
**Issue:** 相似 here is the technical sense of "semblance/seeming" (as in 相似般若).
"Apparent" in English defaults to "obvious", nearly reversing the meaning.
**Fix:** "genuine and not merely seeming... What I call seeming altruism..." (or
"a semblance of altruism").
### m8. 心路规则 rendered "rules of the mental road" — awkward
**Location:** target.dj line 123, source line 123
**Current:** "The precepts are the rules of the mental road in the course of
practice."
**Issue:** "Rules of the mental road" is not idiomatic; the road-trip metaphor
("行驶在三善道") works better if introduced naturally.
**Fix:** "The precepts are the rules of the road for the mind in the course of
practice."
### m9. 三善道 rendered "three wholesome realms"
**Location:** target.dj line 123, source line 123
**Current:** "protect us as we travel safely along the path of the three wholesome
realms"
**Issue:** 三善道 (gods, asuras, humans) is standardly "the three fortunate
rebirths/destinies". "Wholesome realms" blurs the rebirth-destination sense; the
parallel 三恶道 is elsewhere "the three lower realms" (lines 132, 141), which is
fine — but the pair should match.
**Fix:** "the three fortunate destinies" (and optionally align 三恶道 as "the three
unfortunate destinies", though "lower realms" is acceptable).
### m10. 救度 rendered "help" — too weak
**Location:** target.dj line 173, source line 173
**Current:** "How can we help them?"
**Issue:** 救度 is soteriological — to save/deliver beings. "Help" loses the
deliverance sense.
**Fix:** "How can we bring them to the Dharma?" or "How can we deliver them?"
### m11. 缘起 rendered inconsistently
**Location:** target.dj line 132 ("the empty nature of conditioned arising") vs
line 187 ("dependently arisen"); also "causes and conditions" at lines 44, 181
**Issue:** 缘起 shifts between "conditioned arising" and "dependent arising" within
one text. Both are standard, but one should be chosen.
**Fix:** Prefer "dependent arising"/"dependently arisen" throughout: line 132
"contemplating that dependent arising is empty by nature".
### m12. 见道位/修道位 mix "path" and "stage" in one sentence
**Location:** target.dj line 58, source line 58
**Current:** "realizing awakened nature through the path of seeing... During the
path of cultivation... through the stage of seeing and the stage of cultivation"
**Issue:** The same 位 is "path" in one clause and "stage" in the next.
**Fix:** Use "stage" (or "path") uniformly within the passage.
### m13. 横超 rendered inconsistently
**Location:** target.dj line 75 ("lead us directly beyond the three realms") vs
line 151 ("the shortcut directly transcending the three realms")
**Issue:** 横超三界 is a technical Pure Land expression (transverse/direct
transcendence of the three realms, vs. vertical exit through gradual attainment).
Two different renderings obscure that the same term is in play.
**Fix:** Unify, e.g. "lead us straight out of the three realms" / "the shortcut
straight out of the three realms", or keep "transcend the three realms directly" in
both places.
### m14. 在选择过程中 rendered "In the process of searching"
**Location:** target.dj line 73, source line 73
**Current:** "In the process of searching, we discover that only the Three Jewels
can lead us to liberation."
**Issue:** 选择 = choosing, not searching; the passage is about weighing options
(wealth, status), not seeking.
**Fix:** "In the process of choosing, we discover..."
### m15. Unmarked addition of Avataṃsaka attribution
**Location:** target.dj line 108, source line 108
**Current:** "the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra*'s 'Chapter on the Vows of Samantabhadra' is a
classic text..."
**Issue:** The attribution is factually correct (《普贤行愿品》 is the final chapter
of the Avataṃsaka), but it is an addition to the source. Given that the chapter
title is used bare later, a one-time gloss is helpful — but it should be marked as
a translator's clarification or trimmed.
**Fix:** Either "the 'Chapter on the Vows of Samantabhadra' (of the *Avataṃsaka
Sūtra*)" as an explicit gloss, or drop the attribution.
**Location:** target.dj line 50, source line 50
**Current:** "It is at this level that we say mind, Buddha, and sentient beings are
not three separate things."
**Issue:** "Not three separate things" suggests ontological merging; the formula
means there is no difference among the three. The standard rendering is well known.
**Fix:** "It is at this level that we say there is no difference among mind,
Buddha, and sentient beings."
### m17. Yogācārabhūmi quote: "for oneself" is interpretive
**Location:** target.dj line 96, source line 96
**Current:** "Such an aspiration is determined to seek unsurpassed bodhi for
oneself, and to seek the welfare of sentient beings."
**Issue:** 定自希求 is "certainly aspires" (定自 as an adverbial modifier), not
"seeks for oneself". The current reading is defensible as a contrast with
有情义利 but introduces a self/other split the grammar does not require.
**Fix:** "Such an aspirant surely seeks unsurpassed bodhi, and seeks to accomplish
the welfare of sentient beings."
## Completeness
Verified complete. All source sections are present in target.dj: title, dateline,
table of contents (all seven entries with matching anchors), opening remarks, the
six numbered sections, closing summary, all ten Q&A exchanges, and Master Da'an's
concluding remarks. Line alignment is 1:1 (195/195); no paragraph, quotation, or
list item was omitted, and no unmarked additions beyond m15 were found.
## Terminology Consistency (positive findings)
The following are rendered consistently and to standard; no action needed:
- 我执 → "self-grasping"; 法执 → "grasping at phenomena"
bodhicitta", 世俗/胜义 → "conventional/ultimate")
- 信愿行 → "faith, aspiration, and practice"; 三资粮 → "three provisions"
- 出离心 → "renunciation"; 娑婆 → "Sahā world"; 极乐 → "Ultimate Bliss"
- 戒定慧 → "precepts, concentration, and wisdom"; 正见 → "right view"
